Does the consequences of plagiarism surprise me?

I am not surprised by this. It is fair, because we should not steal someone else's hard work and pretend it is ours. That would encourage laziness and I would hate to have my hard work stolen too. Critical thinking is essential. It is one of the reasons why we study. Plagiarism only makes us think less.

Plagiarism is the act of using the words, ideas, or analysis of another person and presenting them as your own without proper citation. (Excelsior Online Writing Lab (OWL), 2022).

 CONSEQUENCES OF PLAGIARISM

Plagiarism can have serious consequences for your academic and professional career. If you are caught plagiarizing at the University of the People, you might receive a zero mark for your assignment. You might also get a second chance to redo your work, but this depends on the instructor's discretion. It is not a guarantee. In some cases, you might even receive a failing grade for the course or be expelled from the university. Plagiarism can also affect your reputation and transcript.

 WHY STUDENTS ENGAGE IN PLAGIARISM?

Students may engage in plagiarism for various reasons. One reason is dishonesty. Some students may intentionally copy and paste from other sources without giving credit, hoping to get a better grade or save time. Another reason is poor planning. Some students may not allocate enough time to research, write, and revise their assignments. When they face a tight deadline, they may resort to plagiarism as a shortcut.

STRATEGIES TO AVOID PLAGIARISM:

- Learn what plagiarism is and what it is not.  Knowing the definition and examples of plagiarism will help you avoid it in your writing.

- Plan ahead and start early. Don't wait until the last minute to write your paper. Give yourself enough time to research, write, and revise your work. Don't plagiarize!

- Use your own words and cite your sources. Don't rely too much on quotations. They won't make your paper original. Try to paraphrase or summarize the author's ideas in your own words and give proper credit to the source.

- Follow the citation style guidelines. Make sure you are using the correct format and rules for citing your sources. Whether it is APA, MLA, or another style, be consistent and accurate.
