Plants harvest energy from the Sun. They then use it to turn Carbon dioxide, gas into glucose and Oxygen as a by product.
PHOTOSYNTHESIS
Plants make things out of light. For instance, in order for them to store energy in form of Starch and Glycogen, they get energy from the Sun to turn Carbon dioxide gas from the animals, into sugar called glucose. Let us break the word photosynthesis down. Photo is light and synthesis is making out. Photosynthesis is therefore making out of light. (Khan Academy, 2015).
Plants differ in the way they absorb light or in the way they get energy from the Sun. What really differentiate them is what is known as “Photosystems”. The plants harvest energy from the Sun. This energy is transported to chlorophyll. The chlorophyll is at the center of each photosystem. The chlorophyll molecule is what is called “the reaction center”. All energy from the Sun pass through it. When chlorophyll receives this energy, it really excites electrons. (Tapley, 2002).
It is the responsibility of electrons to carry the energy from the Sun to what is known as “Electron acceptor molecule”. As the electrons make their way to where they are directed, they start releasing energy along the way. The energy released by the electrons, is the energy used to form an energy currency called “Adenosine triphosphate”. This happens in the process Tapley, (2002) call “Photophosphorylation”. It is simply the addition of phosphates group to adenosine diphosphate (A.D.P).
Adenosine Triphosphate
This is a high energy currency when photosynthesis is taking place. It is like a money currency we use to buy something useful. A.T.P is used, like money , to perform immediate work. (Rye, et al., 2016).
A.T.P, is the primary energy used to perform chemical reaction. I would not describe it better than Rye, et al., (2016), “ as its name suggests, adenosine triphosphate is comprised of adenosine bond to three phosphate groups”. (OpenStax, Adenosine Triphosphate).
Conclusion
Electrons play an important role in a chemical reaction. They transfer and release energy. This energy is what is useful in performing immediate work. It is a primary energy. It is like a money currency. Both plant and animal cells need it in order to perform or work.
