HOW READING CAN IMPACT YOU AND YOUR FAMILY

Reading is a powerful activity that can benefit you and your family in many ways. Research shows that reading can enhance cognitive, language, and social development in children and adults. (Edwards, 2011).

I have seen the positive effects of reading in my own family. My two-year-old daughter loves school and reading very much. We have been preparing her for that by buying her books and reading to her. Whenever we are reading for our personal studies, we read out loud so that she can hear and learn.

Access to books prepares children for community impact and academic success. I believe that one of the greatest gifts we can give to our children is access to books. (Edwards, 2011).

Reading is not only important for achievement, but also for survival. It gives us access to understand other worlds and cultures. It is important to know that the ability to understand information and stories is a key to a life of purpose and meaning. (Edwards, 2011).

Reading also brings us closer to each other, creating a sense of unity in a “global village”. It shapes our children and gives them the skill of critical thinking (check out my critical thinking post here: 2) and helps them understand the concerns of all humanity and the role they can play in this world. (Edwards, 2011).

In Africa, we face many challenges due to poverty. However, we should have access to reading materials. These materials can come from schools, homes, electronic sources, or public libraries. Reading can empower us to overcome our difficulties and achieve our goals.
