EVERYONE'S RELATIVE SYNDROME ALSO ABAITS CORRUPTION BY ALLAN MUFWANA

The One Zambia One Nation motto helped this country to be united and inter-marry in a way one would say has been a blessing to this nation. Due to these inter-marriages, many Zambians are related in one way or the other making it appear like we are all everyone's relative.

This even makes one to think solemnly the words found in the Bible which says, "From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands." Acts 17:26 NIV

This unit is seen in many ways during celebratory moments like weddings, graduations or when someone gets elected or appointed to a prominent position in Government or in the corporate world. It's further observed when calamities such as funerals happen because there is a call for togetherness which results in mobilizing of resources and funds to easy the burden of the grieving family. This truly affirms the idea I am advancing, an era of "everyone's relative" This is a good thing and should be encouraged to continue.

On the other hand, this scenario, "everyone's relative" is without what one may call the bad side of it when it comes to national development and the fight against corruption. It's in our nature as human beings to appreciate relationships and strive so much to protect and support each other within those relationship boundaries. Unfortunately, when one casts a wider eye regarding putting the interest of the nation first, one can't fail to see the negative side effects of "everyone's relative" syndrome at play.

To quote the words of Professor PLO Lumumba "At all times, it should be remembered that our nations are fragile and like an egg, must be dealt with carefully." we can not have a mind set that glorifies or turns a blind eye to corruption when the perpetrator is of our own; same blood line or related closely yet at the same time call it evil when the perpetrator belongs elsewhere.

Majority of Zambians attend church services and have had the opportunity to listen to God's word preached numerous times. Statistics further show that over 85% of Zambians claim to be Christians yet when one uses the lense of the Bible to observe the actions of men and women, one is left wondering who we claim to be.

The actions of the majority speak to the contrary of what the Bible teaches.

Our soft spot towards corruption due to "everyone's relative" mentality is not pleasing.

Unfortunately this has to a large extent trickled down to many ordinary citizens who turn a blind eye to corruption of all sort when it involves "their own". it seems many of us can't read the times and seasons we are in.

The Bible in 1 Chronicles 12:32 exhorts us to understand the times and seasons and this era we are in calls that we be wise and understand what's going on.

The recent revelations regarding the allegations of massive loiting that happened at Ministry of Finance (MOF) in Lusaka which even led to the arrest of 18 top officials can't just go without any reasonable citizens raising pertinent questions as to why such massive looting? If such looting happened at MoF, what about other ministries? What about in parastal companies?

This heartless, barbaric looting goes to affirm my position that, we are facing the negative effects of everyone's relative mentality were by evil can not be challenged, condemned or reported to relevant law enforcement officers because either are benefiting directly of indirectly in the name of everyone's relative.

It's high time citizens got interested in corruption cases at all levels regardless of who is involved. Let's stop focusing on politicians alone but everyone including those in low profile positions. We can't afford losing millions of kwacha's through corruption in the lower ranks and turn a blind eye or play "everyone's relative" games and expect our nation to develop. Wake up from the negative effects of "everyone's relative" mentality pertaining to national development.

Going forward the net should be cast even wider and ensure result oriented audits are carried out to curb massive corruption at all levels. The masses should awaken to the position that everyone has the right to speak out against corruption and injustices as long as doesn't break the law.

Let audits be Intensified in all institutions including schools more especially that the Government has out in place the education for all policy and funds are being disbursed. Increased CDF allocations to constituencies shouldn't see corruption rise abaited through everyone's relative mentality.

Wrong doing is wrong doing and once many citizens rise above board and start to see and call corruption for what it is; a cancer that eats slowly the nation's economical and social status, the better it will be for the current populace and Zambian posterity.
