“Jessica, you need to come to Honduras to help us celebrate this Community Impact Award,” urged fifteen World Relief staff inspired by her enthusiastic belief in them.
In her native Spanish, Creating Jobs Academy instructor Jessica Morales had just helped them imagine their governor presenting them with this award five years from now. A festive crowd is gathered to celebrate the hope that’s been multiplied in thousands of graduates of Creating Jobs courses.
Jessica knew that envisioning a better future is the first step towards co-creating it with God and each other. Her energy and love are nurturing big dreams for their communities – and she looks forward to seeing their impact first-hand!
In that same train-the-trainer session, Academy Director Isaac Linck led a unit connecting two arenas that many were led to believe are diametrically opposed: business and faith. They are brought together by a Mosaic law instructing farmers to leave the corners of their fields unharvested so that widows, orphans, immigrants, and the poor could glean. Not only does this provide dignified work that sustains life, it also directly connects business to acting on God’s heart for the poor.
Just when Isaac was concerned about whether the World Relief trainees were ready to marry these traditionally separate aspects of life, they shared a real-life local example of a farmer who perfectly embodies this command from Leviticus 19:9-10. Felix Padilla, who grows beans, corn, and fruits on his farm in Guayabito, Honduras took a different approach to the common experience of having crops stolen right off of his fields. Unlike the neighboring farmers who understandably took a confrontational approach to protecting their business profits, he actually brought bags to those who were stealing his corn to put food on their tables. He helped them pick what they needed and even drove them home in his truck!
Not only did his actions value people over profits, but he made new friends who from then on complied with his request to “just ask” rather than stealing corn. His generosity of not maximizing profit at all costs has actually helped his business, making him the only nearby farmer who is not stolen from!
While teaching this academy unit on faith and business, Isaac was curious about how a well-educated trainee who had worked for the UN would respond to this challenge to a widely accepted belief. After class, Isaac was pleasantly surprised when Jorge approached him to say: “I appreciate the new perspective you’ve given me. For the first time, I see how business and faith are connected. Thank you!”
Please pray that this community-serving purpose of business will take root across Honduras as these 15 World Relief staff teach our business courses to hundreds this year and thousands in years to come!
In gratitude,
