Extrinsic motivation is the type of motivation that comes from the results of the process, not the process itself. The focus is on the end goal, not the activity. The activity does not satisfy the learner, but the outcome does. (Deci & Gagne, 2005).

Personal Example

One of the reasons why I wanted to learn English was to communicate fluently and avoid being laughed at. I imagined how my situation would improve by learning the language. I hoped that my friend would stop mocking me. I also wanted to speak one of the most widely used languages in the world.

My motivation was the outcome, not the learning process.

Intrinsic motivation is the opposite of extrinsic motivation. When you are intrinsically motivated, you do an activity because you find it enjoyable or satisfying, not because of the outcome. The activity itself is your motivation. (Deci & Gagne, 2005).

You are interested in the process, not the result. (Deci & Gagne, 2005).

When I started learning English, I began to love it. I did not care who was laughing at me. The extrinsic motivation turned into intrinsic motivation.

Difference between extrinsic and intrinsic motivation

Extrinsic motivation is the type of motivation that comes from the results of the process, not the process itself. We act because we are interested in the outcome, not the activity. (Deci & Gagne, 2005).

Intrinsic motivation is the opposite of extrinsic motivation. We act because we enjoy the activity, not the outcome. The activity itself is satisfying, not the result. (Deci & Gagne, 2005).

Both types of motivation can help me achieve my goals and become a better person. They can also influence each other. For example, some students enter college because of the prospect of a high salary (extrinsic motivation). However, as they engage in the learning process, they may develop an interest and passion for their field of study (intrinsic motivation). Extrinsic motivation can lead to intrinsic motivation, or vice versa.

Conclusion

I am motivated to learn by my love for knowledge. This love also makes me appreciate the outcomes of my learning. I can solve some of the day-to-day problems that I face because of the knowledge I acquire. What I love benefits my family, my community, and my country. I hope it will also benefit your country and your people.
